Sewing Up A Storm

I was gonna be all cool and blog only one post per project I’ve completed since last month.  But I trashed that idea and figured I’d catch ya all up in one super post.  So go grab you a drink and sit a spell, cause its gonna take a bit of time to get through all these projects and photos.

This is the pin cushion I sent to my partner in the Scrappy Pin Cushion Swap.  Granted, it’s not very “scrappy” looking, but it was made with scraps, so I think it fits.  I love the little embroidered flowers – they are called the spiderweb rose.

I used this tutorial to make it.  You should really head over to the flickr group and check out all the wonderful pin cushions!

I also made a scrappy blue pin cushion.  It was a contender for the Scrappy Pin Cushion Swap, but I sent the one above.  I’m telling you, it’s hard to stop at just one pinnie!  They are so addictive to make.

This one ended up being sent to my July Mini QT Swap Partner.  Mini QT is another flickr group swap, with themes every other month.  The quilts made are less than 12″ square, hence the mini.  They are all quite cute quilts!

This month’s theme was Beach/Underwater.  This is the quilt I sent to my partner with the blue pin cushion.

I have a thing for penguins and this one even has an umbrella in his drink!  I also love how the trees are coming inward because of Pengie’s size.

For those interested this is the sketch that I drew prior to making the quilt.  Some people enjoy seeing the process.  I’m hoping to add more “in process” type of photos.

The MiniQT Swap group recently broke out another group called The Bitty Block Committee where we send out 11 of the same block (3.5 in) to everyone and in return we get 11 back!  Add your own block and you have 12 3.5″ blocks to make a mini quilt out of.  I’ll post again when I get all of the other blocks in, but here’s the block I sent.

Again it’s the underwater theme.  Here’s all 12 that I made.  It took longer than I had thought to do the embroidery thread that way.  One wouldn’t be bad, but repeating it 12 times did.  I survived!!

I love how it turned out.  And here’s the first block I did beside a block I sent out.  Amazing what fabric choices can do!

Next up is the doll quilt I made for the doll quilt swap.  I haven’t sent it out as it’s too early.  I’ll send it out about the last week of August I think.  I can’t say too much about it as I don’t want to give it away as to who my partner is.  But here is the original drawing, a pic of the mini quilt in process and the final binded quilt ready to go.

I love her and it is going to be so hard to let her go.  I’ve gotten some really great responses from the Doll Quilt Swap pool too!

Now for the virtual sewing bee update!  As for the Mish Mash Stash Bash, June was so much fun and my introduction to the applique world to which, well, if you noticed the projects above, I’ve gotten quite addicted (and very good at writing run on sentences!).  Trees were requested for June.  My color was to be pink, so I made these trees.

But before making that one, I had to practice and make green trees.  I almost like the green ones better!

Both were alot of fun!

For July – I had a challenge.  A paper-pieced Hunter’s Star pattern.  My first challenge was that the queen bee requested reds and tans, the very two colors I had very little of.  The second challenge was figuring out the right size of material and how to place it so that the area would be covered after piecing.  I must say that after finishing these I definitely felt a sense of accomplishment!  I don’t have the triangles joined because she wanted it really scrappy, but here is a picture of all 8 paper-pieced triangles laid out together.  Maybe you can see the star pattern.

As for my Sew Bee Wonky group… they are a hoot!  I’m loving these girls and so glad we got together for our virtual quilting bee surrounding wonky blocks.  First up, the July blocks was my month.  I requested wonky square in square blocks using these kona cottons.

The girls have really just out done theirselves!  The blocks they sent back are AMAZING! Feel free to go to the flickr group and look at all the wonky blocks that are being made!  I almost have them all and will keep ya updated as I have a lot to add to it.

August’s block is for Kellie.  She asked for Wonky houses and sent 30′s prints.  The block was so much fun!  I think it’d be cute to make placemats out of these wonky houses!

Whew!  We made it through and I don’t think I’ve left anything out.  Been pretty busy this past month or so – and have enjoyed Every.Single.Minute.Of.It.

Til next time,

Kandra
