Like Mother…Like Daughter

My New Year’s Resolution for 2008 was to not buy a single gift – to make everything that I needed to give.  Of course I didn’t think about this until about 3 minutes before Jan 1st…and what a hard commitment to create so last minute before ringing in the New Year!  I tried my hardest to stick with the plan, not only because it’s really special but because I like to watch my savings account grow.  Honestly I have made about 90% of the gifts that my family has given this year and I have learned to never make an all inclusive resolution like that again!

Children pick up our behavior so quickly, without us adults even really noticing until it’s pretty apparent that we have created our own little mini-me.  Sometimes it’s adorable and sometimes it’s annoying, at least in my opinion, but what amazing potential these children have!  I try my hardest to expose Katie to anything and everything she seems interested in, I don’t ever want to deprive her from expanding her mind or her creativity.  She came to me on Sunday about her dad’s birthday present and mentioned she wanted to make him something herself and mentioned something that he could take with him hunting.  I told her that if she wanted to make it then she would need to think of an idea and present that to me.  Katie decided the perfect gift would be a fleece camouflage neck pillow…and the sewing project began!

Katie drew out her own pattern and pinned the fabrics in place all by herself

Taking the time to smile for mom

All done with sewing and trimming, time to turn it right side out

As Katie calls it “filling the pillow with cotton candy”

Finally finished…must try it out!

Of course having a seven year old daughter you begin to expect lipstick on your truck windows when it’s your birthday =)

Justin  had a wonderful birthday – Katie and I were exhausted!

  1. Katie did a great job and I’m sure that Justin enjoyed the present. How funny is it that she was sewing camo, while wearing camo?!? LOL
